Giveaway of the Day (also known as GAOTD) is unique in that it only gives away computer software downloads, and only one free download is offered each day. GAOTD is really an advertisement portal for lesser known software developers, allowing them to get the word out about their software in exchange for giving away one completely free program to GAOTD users.
What I Like:
- FULL VERSION SOFTWARE. The free downloads are full version programs - not just samples with a trial period. Each download comes with any required usernames and serial numbers.
- LEGAL SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS. Since the free software is being given away by the developers for promotional reasons, it is 100% legal to download and use them.
- VIRUS FREE. No need to worry about hidden viruses or malware within the software. They are checked and approved before GAOTD will provide them.
- COMPLETELY FREE. Giveaway of the Day does not require any membership fees (or even registration) to use their site.
- GAME GIVEAWAY. A companion site is also offered that gives away full versions of computer games. Again, only one each day.
What I Don't Like:
- The usefulness of the software offered really varies. One day they might have a computer utility program that I really like and use, and then the next day they might offer a screensaver. Thankfully, GAOTD features a user comments section where other users like myself can post what they think of the day's software. I have found that to be very helpful in determining if that piece of software is right for me.
- Sometimes installing the downloaded software can be confusing. Download consists of a zip file with (usually) a program .exe file, an activation file, and a readme file. It is important to view the readme first to know the proper way of installing each file.
- Installing and activating the program must be done the same day in which it is downloaded. If not, you are stuck with just the trial version of the software instead of the full version. I've experienced this a few times myself.
- I've downloaded dozens of software titles through GAOTD. Though I haven't had any problems with viruses, I have had trouble uninstalling some of the software that I tried and decided I didn't want. Apparently some of the software developers don't make it easy to uninstall their software.
This is definitely a site to check out. After all, it's free software! There's nothing to lose except some of your time and hard drive space...and you might end up with something really useful.
